The Greenhouse is fulfilling Kim Braniff’s passion for gardening and nurturing. Kim has never taken on such a venture before, but with the “full bloomed” (or full-blown) support both emotionally and physically from her husband Tom, they are open for business and looking mighty fine!

In Full Bloom has been a labor of love and definitely reflects that. As soon as you see it’s unique rustic storefront and meticulously constructed greenhouse and it’s amenities, you know that these folks are here to do business.

Just to start, they are carrying 40 to 45 varieties of flowers and then about 20 varieties of fruits and vegetables. There are multiple varieties of cucumbers and tomatoes and then an array of various other eatables such as peppers, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, eggplant, honeydew, cantaloupe, watermelon and more.

The Braniff’s have plans to add an outdoor garden to the business this summer and then will be able to offer fresh produce right from their doors. Eventually, even some herbs will be added to their medley of products.

In Full Bloom Greenhouse & Gardens is currently operating under a limited spring schedule, but hours will be added as summer approaches. Currently, it is open on Wednesday and Thursday’s from Noon to 7:00 PM. And, on Friday and Saturday’s from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Value Sheet Get Clean

For the edible items, try finding products grown and/or made locally in your area. Between the packaging materials and then the emissions given off by shipping them, it can add up to a lot of waste and pollution. Also, finding a local eatery to dine out at, is an excellent idea. Even if you end up paying a little more for a meal, think about the offsets for not driving very far.

In the aroma department, opt for natural candles made of soy or beeswax. And, if you want to be very creative, find a local person that blends essential oils and purchase a gift certificate for a custom fragrance blending for your beloved.

The Valentine card can be very eco-friendly, by creating and/or purchasing an online E-card. But, if you must present a tangible card, try making or buying one out of recycled materials.

“Green” products on the market have almost doubled from 2009 to 2010. It’s our responsibility to become educated about the products and then make the best decision possible for our family and the planet.

As for Shaklee, there are over 50 years of testimonials to validate the efficacy and quality of Shaklee products.  Shaklee was “green” when green was just a color.  My family has used the Shaklee products for over 3 years and had only superior results related to cleaning and no adverse health effects. Statistically, studies have shown that women in the United States have breast cancer rates that are 4 to 7 times higher than women in China and Japan. Also, there have been studies showing that when Chinese or Japanese migrate to this country, their risk of breast cancer is no different from that of any other US citizen by the second or third generation.

Based on that, it seems pretty clear to me, that increased risk of cancer in US women is not a matter of genetics. It very possibly is caused by the US lifestyle.

A study by Dr. Larrisa Korde and her colleagues at the National Cancer Institute studied 1563 women of Chinese, Japanese or Filipino descent aged 20 to 55 years (597 with breast cancer and 966 without) and determined their intake of soy-containing foods during childhood, adolescence and as adults.

They then divided the women into three groups – those with high frequency of soy intake (more than 1.5 times/week), those with medium frequency of soy intake (1 to 1.5 times/week), and those with low frequency of soy intake (0 to 1 times/week – not unlike the average American).

The results are very interesting:

A high level of soy intake in childhood was associated with a 58% reduction in breast cancer. A high soy intake during adolescence and the adult years was associated with a 20-25% reduction in breast cancer (Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention, 18: 1050-1059, 2009).

Additionally, a December 2009 report in the Journal of the American Medical Association, showed that soy consumption decreases the risk of breast cancer recurrence in those women who do develop breast cancer.
